Finally, Yahoo Publisher Network launched what was most speculated, the smart pricing feature for Yahoo Publisher Network partners and Yahoo Search Marketing advertisers.

Here is the excerpt from launch email

In an ongoing effort to strengthen our Sponsored Search and Content Match marketplaces, Yahoo! will be introducing a new traffic quality feature called “quality-based pricing”. This feature is rolling out beginning today and we plan to continue to expand it over time.

Quality-based pricing will give us the ability to price traffic commensurate with the value that advertisers receive from each traffic source. We recognize that this approach may have an impact on how you operate your business, and as a valued Yahoo! publisher we wanted to let you know about this new feature, as you may notice fluctuations in your Yahoo! Publisher Network earnings.

Quality-based pricing reinforces our overall commitment to deliver long-term success for our distribution partners, a high-quality experience for users and high-value traffic to our advertisers. We are excited about this initiative, and plan to work closely with you as we roll out these features across our network.

Sincerely,

The Yahoo! Publisher Network Team

Are you wondering about why the CPC you are receiving for AdSense is lower, even if your content is being served with high paying ads. There has been lot of talk and discussion about getting high paying ads. One most important point in this, one should know that Google serves top paying ads in order. So first ad on your page will always be carrying max CPC. Now if this ad is being shown on top header where users are least likely to click on it, you are wasting a chance to get max CPC.

So if you are showing ads all over content page without regard to Google heat map, you may be loosing lot of money just due to poor ad placement. Key point is to serve less ads which will have high chances of getting clicked and highest possible CPC.

Showing less ads also has a side benefit of increasing the competition among advertisers for top spots. If your page is showing 12 ads, those many advertisers will get chance to get their ads displayed at lower cost, but you have only 4 ad spots they have compete to get their ads on your pages.

Also, with less ads your site visitors would be less annoyed by the ads splattered over content pages.

This has been point of repeated discussion (and worry) in almost all forums related to YPN that I thought I will put it on my blog for once. Its not that Yahoo doesn’t know about this problem, but probably they are too busy fixing others that this one doesn’t take any priority.

So far in my YPN experience I have seen following status messages

Check Pending : Check is being processed
Check Error- Status Unknown : Check is sent out by Yahoo and its on your way
Check Issued – Check deposited by receiver

Yahoo typically reviews and transfers the amount to available balance section and immediately to check processing around first week of each month, so that all checks are issued by 15th.

Yahoo YPN (program similar to Google AdSense) is planning to roll out major feature release this spring. This includes new features like direct deposits into the partners bank account (as of now Yahoo sends out checks through normal post), search box placement.

One of major update will be introduction of contextual match engine. Publishers have been complaining about lack of relevant ads from Yahoo YPN. Yahoo introduced category targeting but that doesn’t really address the contextual relevancy problem. As per common opinion the CTR of Yahoo YPN ads is low because of poor ads relevancy resulting into loss of revenues by publishers.

Yahoo also plans to expand YPN program to international publishers in spring. The YPN is so far available to only US publishers.
